The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has lifted Stage-IV restrictions of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) due to significant improvements in air quality.

The decision was taken after the GRAP Sub-Committee reviewed air quality data on January 16. According to the official order, “The Sub-Committee decides to revoke with immediate effect its orders dated 15.01.2025, for invoking actions under Stage-IV (‘Severe+’ Air Quality) of the GRAP schedule.”

Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has dropped to 302, classified as “Very Poor,” from the earlier “Severe+” levels exceeding 400 earlier this week. The improvement is credited to favorable weather conditions, including rainfall and increased wind speeds. Despite this, GRAP measures under Stages I, II, and III will remain in effect to prevent a relapse in air quality levels.

The official order also noted, “As per the Air Quality & Weather forecast provided by IMD/IITM, the AQI is likely to remain in the lower end of the ‘Very Poor’ category in the coming days due to favorable meteorological conditions and wind speed. However, as a precaution, Stage III of GRAP will continue, and the situation will be reviewed as necessary, considering uncertainties in weather predictions and potential fluctuations.”

Earlier this week, on Wednesday, CAQM had invoked both Stage-III (‘Severe’ Air Quality) and Stage-IV (‘Severe+’ Air Quality) measures under GRAP as air quality in Delhi-NCR deteriorated.

In response to the poor air quality earlier, the Delhi government’s Directorate of Education had instructed schools to adopt hybrid learning modes for students up to Class IX and XI. An official order stated, “All Heads of Schools of Govt., Govt. Aided, Unaided Recognized Private Schools of DOE, NDMC, MCD, and Delhi Cantonment Board are directed to conduct classes for children up to Class IX & XI in a ‘Hybrid Mode,’ i.e., both physical and online.”

The improved air quality offers a brief respite for residents, though authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure sustainable air quality levels in the region.
